About North School

  • North School is a vibrant and inclusive community dedicated to fostering academic excellence, personal growth, and a strong sense of citizenship. Our mission is to empower every student to reach their full potential by providing a rigorous, supportive, and engaging learning environment.

North Hillsborough School is one of three elementary schools serving the children of Hillsborough, California. North houses 14 TK-5 general education classrooms as well as an Innovation Lab, school library, resource room, school psychologist's office, music classroom, behavioral and occupational therapy office, counselor's office, speech and language office, a multi-purpose room for physical education and an adaptive PE program. In addition, our Hillsborough Recreation Department provides a Preschool/Pre-K program serving students ages 3 through 5, a robust instrumental music program, and a number of before and after-school enrichment programs (athletic, science, STEM, art, yoga, cooking, debate and workshop education) at our North site. In 2017-18, North received a California Distinguished School Award for its role in MTSS and Service Learning.

All of North's classroom teachers are fully certified, and we have both a primary and upper elementary Learning Center class. In addition, North also has a full-time librarian, a music teacher, PE teacher, Innovation Lab teacher, resource specialist, full-time school counselor, a reading specialist and a full-time speech therapist. Our occupational therapist and school psychologist are shared with one of the other elementary schools. Additionally, our schools share one full-time behaviorist currently serving the Learning Center.

As a California Distinguished School, North School is committed to meeting the diverse needs of all learners. The dedicated staff of educators works collaboratively to create a personalized and inclusive curriculum that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. The curriculum at North is aligned to the Common Core State Standards, and our mission is to cultivate a positive and nurturing atmosphere where students feel safe, capable, respected, and valued. A strong focus on social-emotional learning helps North students develop healthy relationships, build resilience, and become responsible citizens.

Parent participation is an integral part of the North school community. The strong partnerships between home and school are essential for student success at North. Parents are actively involved in the school community, participating in various committees, organizing events, and volunteering their time to support our students and staff.  Parents participate in and outside the classroom by leading committees, organizing school events like the Book Fair, Talent Show, Family Heritage Day, Fall Movie Night, and volunteering hours in the library, in the school cafeteria, and during classroom instruction such as Art in Action, as well as during after school events such as the STEAM Fair, Fun Run, school musicals, Battle of the Books, and service learning projects. The school’s Parent Executive Board oversees most of this process and collaborates with the principal throughout the year to develop a deep partnership between parents and staff.

As our students often say, "North Stars Set the Bar!" but it's not just a catch-phrase. As you delve deeper into our website, we believe you'll discover why North School has long been the beacon that the Hillsborough elementary schools look up to as a shining example of inclusivity and academic excellence.
