Head Lice
To maintain a healthy school community, we encourage parents to proactively screen for lice as part of their child’s regular self-care routine rather than waiting for a known exposure. Viewing lice on the head can be difficult sometimes because lice avoid light and can crawl quickly. To find lice, part the hair into sections, and check the scalp closely, especially behind ears and at the neck, for tiny, fast-moving lice or their firmly attached eggs (nits), using a metal fine toothed comb to distinguish them from dandruff.
Research shows that lice are more commonly transmitted during close-contact activities outside of school, such as sports, playdates, or sleepovers, rather than in the classroom.
If lice are detected, please:
- screen the entire household
- seek appropriate treatment, and
- notify the school principal or administrative assistant so we may support your family and the classroom. Exposure letters will be mailed home to parents/guardians of students in that class or school.
